With the initials U.S., Uncle Sam has become the national personification of the American government. Mentioned as early as 1810, Uncle Sam got his standard appearance - white hair and a goatee, wearing a white top hat with white stars on a blue band, a blue tail coat, and red-and-white striped trousers - with the recruitment poster designed by James Montgomery Flagg in 1917, who used his own face as the model. Over 4 million posters of Uncle Sam were printed during World War I and used extensively during World War II.

Flagg was a prolific illustrator who sold his first works at the age of 12. During his career, he worked for numerous popular magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post and Colliers, and was reportedly the highest-paid illustrator in America.
