On December 7, 1941, Japanese troops attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, bringing the United States into World War II. Without a shred of evidence, suspicion fell on the Japanese Americans living on the West Coast. President Franklin D. Roosevelt bowed to political pressure and signed Executive Order 9066. As a result, more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes and live in military internment camps for the rest of the war. This roundup of innocent people became one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history.
