For twenty-plus years following the Vietnam War, the Australian Army was neglected by governments which avoided overseas deployments excep for "peacekeeping" missions. That changed in 1999, when Australians led a multinational force to strife-torn East Timor. Since then the army has developed steadily, while the "diggers" have seen an almost continuous series of combat operations, both as a regional power and alongside US and British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
